Bannister, Donal

Donal Bannister has been Principal Trombone of the BBCNOW, and trombone instructor at RWCMD since 2007. Previously he was for 20 years a member of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. His musical interests and activities are wide ranging and varied. In addition to his work at BBCNOW, he is a regular guest with many other British Orchestras and ensembles, performing on trombone(s), euphonium, bass trumpet, and historical instruments. He also regularly arranges music for brass ensembles, is an experienced conductor, and has done many pre-concert talks for both the BSO and BBCNOW. His academic background at Trinity College Dublin informs his teaching style, encouraging his students to develop a holistic interest in all aspects of music, rather than being narrowly interested in just their own instrument. Students who graduate as multi skilled musicians invariably fare better in the wider musical world, and many of his former students are now enjoying thriving careers, that started whilst at RWCMD as extra player.
