Jen Rowlands

Jen Rowlands

Jen has taught in the Design department at RWCMD since 1999, in the capacities of both Stage Designer (scenographer) and Scenic Artist. She trained as a designer at Motley, having previously gained a degree in Fine Art at U.C.W., Aberystwyth.

Design work began in regional rep, mainly in the north of England, before freelancing enabled her to focus on design for modern dance and ballet, which she mixed with the second string to her bow, scenic art. This was developed working with theatre companies around the UK as well as in large London workshops. This enabled her to paint for film and TV as well as opera, dance and West End musicals.

For a time, Jen’s focus shifted back to Fine Art painting, with work being exhibited locally within Cardiff and Bristol, as well as in America. This work continues, alongside teaching part-time at RWCMD; drawing and painting being the mainstays of what she brings to the course, with her tutoring covering set and costume design as well as hands-on scenic art projects which prepare students in all aspects of painting for the stage as well as Film and Television. She helps students conquer their fear of large scale work, until eventually a painting measuring 2m high seems like child’s play; one of the many rewards Jen continues to find in teaching at the College.
