Harris, Stephen

Stephen was born in Gloucester and studied at the Purcell School of Music, Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio.

He joined the music staff of Scottish Opera in 1989 and in 1991 was appointed Chorus Master. In 1993 he was appointed Assistant Chorus Master at English National Opera and in 1994 was appointed Chorus Master, a post he held until 2004.

From 1998-2002 he was also Music Director of Kentish Opera conducting The Marriage of Figaro, The Pearl Fishers, Nabucco, Don Quixote, Die Fledermaus, Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci and Manon Lescaut.

He also worked as a guest Chorus Master for the London Symphony Chorus, Brighton Festival Chorus and the Huddersfield Choral Society. In 2006 he was appointed Chorus Master at the Nederlandse Reisopera, a post he held until 2008. He was then Chorus Master at Welsh National Opera from 2008 to 2014, preparing the chorus for many operas including Khovanshchina, Aida, Otello, The Queen of Spades, Turandot, Nabucco (also Savonlinna Festival), Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (also BBC Prom), Moses und Aron (also ROH).

He has also worked on recordings/concerts with Opera Rara as Chorus Master, preparing the chorus for Les Martyrs, Le duc d’Albe and Il Paria all by Donizetti.

In 2015 he returned to English National Opera as Chorus Master and then in 2017 returned to Welsh National Opera. In 2018 he was guest Chorus Master at Den Norske Opera in Oslo preparing the chorus for Billy Budd. He is now a freelance Chorus Master, coach and Repetiteur.
