Elizabeth May

After studying at the Royal College of Music with Graham Mayger and Sebastian Bell, Liz May joined the orchestra of the Welsh National Opera, where she was sub-principal flute and principal piccolo for 13 years until 2000. Since then, she has enjoyed a flourishing freelance career playing as a regular extra, and often playing principal piccolo, with, amongst others, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales,  BBC Symphony Orchestra and the English Symphony Orchestra. She has also played regularly with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, including the highly acclaimed Oliver Knussen Prom concert and Mark Anthony Turnage’s 50th Birthday.

In the 2018/2019 season Liz was guest principal Piccolo with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, including Proms and many recordings and has continued to play regularly with this orchestra, including 3 Proms in the Summer of 2019.

In Spring 2019 she did a three-week tour of Europe with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as guest principal piccolo, playing amongst other things Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ and Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin.

Liz very much enjoys her teaching, of both flute and piccolo, at RWCMD and Cardiff University, and she also examines regularly at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
