Leslie is Principal clarinettist of the
Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. He previously played as guest
principal clarinet in London with major orchestras such as the
Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic and LSO, and
became a sought-after session musician playing for
TV, radio and film.
He is one of the most experienced tutors of
clarinet in the UK, and has given masterclasses at the Royal
College of Music, Trinity College of Music, Birmingham
Conservatoire, and as far afield as the Academy for Performing Arts
in Hong Kong.
Leslie has inspired many composers to dedicate
works to him, many of which can be heard on the CD “Expressions”
(Clarinet Classics). In December 2010 he recorded the Brahms
Sonatas (with Michael Pollock) and Clarinet Trios with virtuosi
Stjepan Hauser (cello) and Yoko Misumi (piano).
Leslie is author of “Instant Help for Playing
and Teaching the Clarinet”. This is currently recommended reading
for the Associated Board Diploma Course. The “Leslie Craven Model”
mouthpiece is played and recommended by many leading
professionals.
