
Meyrick Alexander has had a long and varied
career as a bassoonist. He held the position of Principal Bassoon
in the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1980 until 2010 when
he left to become Head of Woodwind at the Royal Welsh College of
Music & Drama where he served for seven years, becoming a
bassoon tutor in 2017. He was also on the staff of the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama for thirty years, Birmingham
Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is in
demand as a teacher and lecturer worldwide and has given recitals
and classes in Europe, USA, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and
Singapore.
Meyrick is Principal Bassoon of the
London Chamber Orchestra and was formerly a member of the BBC
Northern Symphony Orchestra and the Northern Sinfonia. He is
currently also freelancing with many British orchestras and plays
period instruments with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
He has appeared as a soloist and chamber player with many of the
UK’s leading ensembles.
He has featured on many recordings including a
recital CD The Wandering Bassoon with the RWCMD’s
distinguished departmental pianist Catherine Milledge.
