Sophie Dicks and Alex Jones - Voice & Piano Duo

British mezzo soprano Sophie Dicks is a recent alumni of the Royal Northern College of Music where she trained to Masters level. She now studies on the Opera Course at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama with Anne Mason. Sophie’s studies are supported by the Leverhulme Trust, the Mario Lanza Educational Foundation, The Aspinwall Educational Trust and a private sponsor in Manchester.

At the RNCM, Sophie sang the role of Varochka in Shostakovich’s Moscow, Cheryomushki and Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Roles for RNCM excerpts include Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Lucretia (The Rape of Lucretia), Angelina, Tisbe (La Cenerentola) and Hermia (A Midsummer Nights Dream).

Professionally, Sophie has worked with Buxton Festival Opera where she covered Lotinka in Dvorak’s The Jacobin and sang in the chorus. She began working with Opera Holland Park in 2015 where she was one of the Christine Collins Young Artists, singing the role of Mallika in Delibes’ Lakmé. Also for OHP she has covered the role of Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, and she sang Suzy in Martin Lloyd Evans’ 2017 production of Puccini’s La Rondine. She recently made her role and company debut singing Dorabella for Opera Holloway’s touring production of Cosi fan Tutte.

On the concert platform works include, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Haydn Theresienmessen, Handel’s Messiah, Durufle Requiem and Rutter’s Feel the Spirit.

Awards include the Freckleton and Doherty cup for singing in 2011, the Annie Ridyard Scholarship for Mezzo-Sopranos and she was an International Opera Awards bursary recipient in 2013. Sophie has been fortunate enough to participate in masterclasses with Rosalind Plowright OBE, Sarah Connolly CBE, Dame Felicity Palmer, Dame Ann Murray and Rebecca Evans.

Future engagements include singing the roles of Zulma (L’Italiani in Algeri) and Tisbe (La Cenerentola) as part of the RWCMD Opera Gala with the WNO orchestra, conducted by Carlo Rizzi.

Alex Jenkins read music at the University of Nottingham, graduating with a BA (Hons) and MA in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Following this he was appointed Musician-in-Residence at Christ’s Hospital School in West Sussex for two years, where he also worked as a piano teacher.

Alex graduated with Distinction from his MPerf in piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music in July 2017 under the tutelage of Simon Lepper, Andrew Zolinsky and Roger Vignoles. He has accompanied vocal masterclasses with Roderick Williams, Lynn Eustis and Toby Spence, and with Sir Thomas Allen at the London Song Festival, as well as taking part in piano accompaniment masterclasses with Graham Johnson and Michael Dussek at the RCM.

Alex was awarded the Titanic Memoriam Prize for best performance by a pianist at the RCM’s Lies Askonas vocal competition and an accompanist’s prize at the Brooks-van der Pump English Song Competition. Additionally Alex has worked extensively as an accompanist for auditions, examinations, recitals and competitions across the UK. He is currently a professional accompanist at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
