Ten things you should know
about life as a student at RWCMD
You will be based in College’s
stunning landmark building, which opened in 2011. The College is in
the heart of Cardiff close to the historical buildings of the City
Hall and the National Museums and Galleries of Wales. The
five-minute walk to the city centre takes you past the magnificent
Cardiff Castle.
The College is a popular venue in
Cardiff offering plenty of opportunities for your work to be seen
and heard by the public. The diverse artistic programme ranges from
intimate student performances to world-class visiting artists and
international festivals. The impressive foyer space with its café
bar is a popular meeting place for the people of Cardiff and a
versatile performance venue.
Backing on to beautiful Bute Park,
the College can probably boast the largest gardens of any college
in the world! It's the perfect place to escape for a picnic in the
summer, or a lunchtime stroll at any time of year.
Having far fewer students than most
other colleges – just over 600 in total – means that we can ensure
that you receive a very high level of personal attention. Most
students enjoy being part of an exceptionally homely, welcoming and
intimate community.
Close working links between the
Students’ Union, Student Experience staff and the College’s
management ensure that students maintain a very strong say in the
way the College is run. The College is able to respond quickly to
student feedback and is committed to placing the student experience
at the centre of everything it does.
With its unique combination of
training programmes including acting, musical theatre, opera, jazz,
performance design and stage management, it’s a vibrant and
exciting place buzzing with creative energy. There are always
interesting collaborations and student-led performances to get
involved in.
Dedicated Student Experience staff
provide support and advice for students student with a range of
different needs. Their offices are located centrally, next to the
student common room, shop, bar and canteen.
Regular social events include open
mic nights, themed end-of-term parties and of course, the Summer
Ball, which is the highlight of the social calendar. The event is
created entirely by the College's talented students, which makes it
totally original and extra special.
The full programme of
extra-curricular activities at the College includes a range of
clubs and societies from football and rugby to Christian Union and
LGBT. Health and well-being groups include yoga, pilates and
circuit training. Other opportunities to complement your training
include careers fairs, employability seminars, and RepCo
projects.
Cardiff offers a range of part-time
work opportunities, and many of students from the College are able
to find work at one or more of the city's arts venues, where they
get to see performances for free. The College employs its own
students for front of house roles, and there are opportunities to
work within the Junior Conservatoire and Young Actors Studio.
